Ahead of Eid, Citizens Queue to Exchange New Banknotes at GBK
Residents have flocked to exchange banknotes for Eid holiday needs at the Basket Hall in the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) area on Thursday (12 March 2026).
The currency exchange service is provided by Bank Indonesia (BI) through the Semarak Rupiah Ramadan and Berkah Idulfitri (SERAMBI) 2026 programme to meet public demand ahead of Eid al-Fitr 2026/1447 H.
Under this programme, currency exchange services have been opened at 2,883 locations with a total of 8,755 service points operated by Bank Indonesia in conjunction with banks throughout Indonesia.
In the Jakarta region specifically, unified currency exchange services are being held from 12-15 March 2026 at the GBK Basketball Hall, Senayan.
Bank Indonesia has set a maximum limit for new banknote exchanges per person to ensure even distribution across the population. Each individual may exchange up to Rp 5.3 million in a single transaction, in denominations ranging from Rp 1,000 to Rp 50,000.
At the venue, the exchange service, which has been open since 09:00 WIB, appears to be attracting large crowds. Several residents were observed waiting in the spectator stands of the GBK Basketball Hall.
Devi, a resident originally from Tangerang, travelled a considerable distance from her home as exchange quotas had been exhausted at locations near her residence.
This year, Bank Indonesia has prepared Rp 185.6 trillion in circulating currency to meet public demand for currency exchange during the Ramadan to Eid al-Fitr 2026 period.
