Ahead of Eid al-Fitr, Pramono Urges Satpol PP to Tackle Beggars Humanely
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has urged the Satpol PP leadership to take firm action against beggars and people pushing carts who frequently appear ahead of Eid al-Fitr. He said such practices do not reflect Jakarta as a global city.
He spoke after inaugurating 521 functional officials at City Hall on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, the majority of whom are Satpol PP functional officers.
‘We have conducted enforcement, including against the so-called human cart pushers. And, thankfully, the streets are not as crowded as they used to be,’ Pramono told reporters at City Hall.
He said the inauguration of the Satpol PP functional officials should be followed by stronger on-the-ground enforcement of regulations. He asked for actions to be taken firmly but humanely.
‘Coincidentally, today the functional Satpol PP officers were sworn in; the majority of whom we will ask to take firm action against the beggars in Jakarta. Because that does not reflect Jakarta as a global city,’ he said.
Nevertheless, Pramono said the DKI Provincial Government would continue to provide work opportunities for residents so they are not dependent on begging on the streets. One of the measures is a policy to relax education requirements for officers of the Handling of Public Infrastructure and Public Facilities (PPSU).
‘As a government, we want everyone in Jakarta to have the opportunity to work. For example, for PJLP, which previously required high school for the orange-clad troops, now a primary school certificate is sufficient. That is one of the breakthroughs we have implemented,’ he added.
