Ahead of Eid al-Adha, West Jakarta to Inspect Animal Sacrifice Holding Sites
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The West Jakarta City Government (Pemkot Jakbar), through the Sub-Department of Food Security, Maritime, and Agriculture (KPKP), has begun inspections of Temporary Animal Sacrifice Holding Sites (TPnHK) ahead of Eid al-Adha 1447 H.
The Head of the Livestock and Animal Health Section of the West Jakarta KPKP Sub-Department, Tanti, stated that inspections started in early May, or about three weeks before Eid al-Adha.
“Eid al-Adha is on 27 May, so we begin inspections three weeks or one month beforehand. In early May, our team has already started visiting the TPnHK in West Jakarta,” she said when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta on Monday.
Tanti mentioned that although not many yet, several TPnHK have begun to appear in various areas, including those monitored in Kelideres Sub-District.
“From information from our field colleagues, empty lands are already being prepared to become TPnHK. Not many yet, just one or two spots,” she said.
Tanti explained that the TPnHK inspections will cover several stages, starting from checking the Animal Health Certificate (SKKH) to aspects of animal welfare.
“The livestock usually come from regions like West Java, Central Java, and so on. They usually have SKKH, which we check,” said Tanti.
Regarding animal welfare aspects, officials will examine how the animals are treated. This typically relates to overly tight tethering, to the provision of food and drink for the sacrificial animals.
“For example, the animals should not be tied too tightly, nor left in the hot sun. At least, if there is no roof, they should be under trees. Also, their food and water must be sufficient. That is the animal welfare aspect. The point is not to torture the animals too much,” she clarified.
In addition to ensuring the animals have SKKH, officials will also directly check the physical condition of the livestock. The examination includes age, eye condition, legs, and walking manner. The checks are conducted to ensure the animals are fit for slaughter (antemortem).
“For Eid al-Adha, whether the animal is of sufficient age, namely two years, checked by the teeth, then healthy eyes, all the way to the back. So from the head, no wounds on the legs, normal walking. In general, that is the pre-slaughter examination, antemortem,” said Tanti.
In 2025, 219 TPnHK emerged in West Jakarta ahead of Eid al-Adha. This year, several new TPnHK have begun to appear and are expected to continue emerging as Eid al-Adha approaches.
