Agriculture Minister Increases Papua Farming Budget to Rp3.2 Trillion for 2026
Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has increased the budget for agricultural development in Papua to around Rp3.2 trillion in 2026. The additional funding is intended to expand agricultural development across various parts of the Land of Papua in line with community aspirations and the commodity potential of each region.
Amran said the success of the agricultural development programme in Wanam, Merauke Regency, South Papua, has encouraged more communities and regional governments to submit similar programmes. As a result, the Ministry of Agriculture has raised the budget allocation so that more areas can receive support for agricultural development.
“Alhamdulillah, we have changed the budget for the Papua we love. We have revised the allocation and provided equipment for Papua Pegunungan — 100,000 packages — and Papua Tengah — 100,000 packages, plus coffee assistance covering thousands of hectares. Everything is tailored to the needs of the communities and the strengths of each region,” Amran said during a dialogue with residents in Wanam, Merauke Regency, South Papua, quoted on Monday (13/7/2026).
According to Amran, enthusiasm among Papuan communities for agricultural development continues to grow. A number of regional heads, together with farmer representatives from West Papua, Southwest Papua, Central Papua and Papua Pegunungan, even travelled to Jakarta in person to propose similar programmes for their respective regions.
The Ministry of Agriculture is preparing assistance matched to the characteristics of each area. Papua Pegunungan and Papua Tengah will each receive 100,000 packages of agricultural equipment to support the development of priority commodities such as taro. The government is also preparing support for coffee, cocoa, sago and soybean development according to each region’s potential.
Previously, the government had allocated agricultural assistance worth Rp1.3 trillion for South Papua in 2026. The assistance covers agricultural machinery and equipment, irrigation construction, farm roads, warehouses, dryers and farmland development to boost productivity and community welfare.
During his visit to Wanam, Amran also approved the opening of around 250 hectares of new rice paddies, with work beginning this year. The government will provide additional tractors, build irrigation networks and apply modern agricultural technology so the area can serve as a model for agricultural development in Papua.
“God willing, it will be completed this year. We take responsibility for it. We will send more tractors, build the irrigation, and apply modern technology in Wanam so that residents can enjoy better harvests,” Amran said.
He stressed that all agricultural development in Papua is funded by the government, with the results intended to improve community welfare. Over the past two years, total government support for agricultural development in Papua has reached approximately Rp5.3 trillion.
