Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has emphasised the strengthening of pumped irrigation (irpom) programmes as one of the main breakthroughs in increasing national agricultural productivity.

According to Amran, the utilisation of water management through pump systems can significantly change farmers’ planting patterns, particularly on dry or upland land.

He explained that land which previously could only be planted once a year now has the potential to be increased to two to three planting seasons.

“This policy is key in driving production increases without having to fully rely on expanding new land,” said Amran in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.

The emphasis was delivered during a working visit to Banyurip Village, Tegalrejo Subdistrict, Magelang Regency, on Thursday (16/4).

At the location, Amran directly witnessed the implementation of pump irrigation which has provided real impacts for local farmers.

The pumped irrigation system with a capacity of 5,000 litres installed there can irrigate around 20 hectares of agricultural land.

The existence of this infrastructure is considered a key factor in increasing the frequency of harvests for farmers in the area.

“This is very creative, where the pump irrigation here is already running. What used to harvest once has become three times,” said Amran.

He affirmed that the success in Magelang will be replicated to various other regions in Indonesia.
