Agriculture Minister Amran: Egg prices fall after action against distribution irregularities

Jakarta (ANTARA) — Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said chicken egg prices had begun to fall after the government coordinated with law-enforcement agencies to address distribution irregularities that were harming farmers and consumers.

“Thankfully, and thank you to the Head of the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Agency and the police. We have spoken and action has begun. The prices had already fallen by the time this was announced. So prices are falling for consumers. This is good news,” Amran said in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He said retail egg prices had started to decline after his ministry coordinated with the Head of the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Agency over irregularities in the commodity’s pricing.

The government is also strengthening support for farmers by providing cheaper feed ingredients and preparing to build an egg-powder factory to reduce dependence on imports.

At a limited food coordination meeting at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs in Jakarta on Monday (26 October 2026), Amran said coordination with law-enforcement agencies was beginning to produce results in stabilising the commodity.

Amran said the price anomaly was apparent in the gap between prices received by farmers and those paid by consumers. Eggs were selling at farm level for around Rp20,000–Rp21,000 per kilogram, while consumer prices reached Rp40,000–Rp45,000 per kilogram.

“Chicken eggs are in surplus; we even export them. But farmers get Rp20,000–Rp21,000 per kilogram. They should be getting Rp26,000 to Rp30,000, yet consumers are paying Rp40,000–Rp45,000. That is above the highest retail price. There is an anomaly,” Amran said.

To help farmers, the government is providing short-term support for feed ingredients. It is buying soybean meal and distributing it directly to farmers for Rp8,630 per kilogram, below private-sector prices of around Rp10,000–Rp12,000 per kilogram.

“Our short-term solution for farmers is, first, the SPHP [maize programme]. The government is also buying soybean feed directly for farmers at Rp8,630 per kilogram, compared with Rp10,000, Rp11,000 or Rp12,000 per kilogram in the private sector,” Amran said.

The government is also supplying maize to small-scale farmers through Bulog’s Food Supply and Price Stabilisation (SPHP) scheme, with a government subsidy. The measure is intended to help farmers obtain feed ingredients at more affordable prices.

Further downstream, the government is preparing to build an egg-powder factory with a state-owned enterprise (SOE).

The facility is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s livestock-processing industry while reducing reliance on imported egg powder.

“Because we import eggs and egg powder from other countries, God willing, we will build [the factory] together with an SOE. Hopefully it will be completed within a year, and then we will stop importing,” he said.

The package of policies is intended to improve the poultry sector from production through processing. The government is addressing price anomalies, helping lower farmers’ production costs and promoting processing industries so domestic output can generate greater added value.

The Ministry of Agriculture continues to promote a stronger national poultry sector so that surplus production benefits farmers while consumers have access to food at reasonable prices.
