AGO to check Soeharto's health
JAKARTA: The Attorney General's Office said on Wednesday it
would consult with its team of doctors to clarify whether former
strongman Soeharto was fit to stand trial for corruption after he
traveled to Central Java and Yogyakarta.
In a surprise move, Soeharto visited the grave of his wife and
mother in Karanganyar, Central Java, and the tomb of his father
in Bantul, Yogyakarta on Tuesday.
On Monday, he visited his favorite son Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala
Putra at Nusakambangan island prison off the coast of the Central
Java town of Cilacap.
During the longest trip he has made since suffering a stroke
in 2000, Soeharto looked healthy as he hugged and shook hands
with a number of people welcoming him.
"We will consult with a team of doctors ... as to whether his
health condition has changed or not as a team of doctors had
concluded that Soeharto was permanently ill," Attorney General's
Office spokesman Barman Zahir said.
The doctors declared Soeharto unfit to stand trial for
allegedly embezzling US$571 million in state funds during his 32
years of authoritarian rule. --Antara
