AGO Responds to Nadiem Makarim's Sentence Being Lower Than Prosecutors' Demand

The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has responded to the sentencing of former Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister Nadiem Makarim, which was lower than the prosecutors’ demand in a corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebooks and Chrome Device Management (CDM). Nadiem was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while prosecutors had demanded 18 years.

Head of the AGO’s Legal Information Centre, Anang Supriatna, said he respected the panel of judges’ decision. He stated that his office is still waiting for the complete copy of the ruling from the judge.

“What is clear is that we appreciate and respect the panel of judges’ decision, in which he was declared guilty. For now, the prosecutor is waiting for the copy. The complete decision will be studied, including the judges’ considerations,” Anang told reporters on Wednesday (1/7/2026).

Regarding Nadiem’s sentence, Anang mentioned that prosecutors are still considering whether to file an appeal. No firm decision has been made by the AGO.

“We still have time to take a stance on the legal remedy of appeal, and currently the public prosecutor is still considering and will state their position in the coming days,” he said.

Previously, Nadiem Makarim was found guilty in the alleged corruption case concerning the procurement of Chromebooks and CDM. The judge sentenced Nadiem to imprisonment.

“Declares that Defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim has been legally and convincingly proven guilty of committing a criminal act of corruption carried out jointly, as per the subsidiary indictment,” said chief judge Purwanto S Abdullah while reading the verdict at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday (30/6).

“Sentences Defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim to imprisonment for 10 years,” the judge added.

The judge stated that the prosecutor’s primary indictment was not proven. The judge declared Nadiem guilty according to the subsidiary indictment, namely violating Article 604 in conjunction with Article 18 of the Corruption Eradication Law in conjunction with Article 20 letter c of Law No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code.

The judge also sentenced Nadiem to pay a fine of Rp 1 billion, subsidiary to 190 days of confinement, and restitution of Rp 809 billion. If Nadiem is unable to pay, his assets can be seized and auctioned. If the assets are insufficient, it will be replaced with 5 years of confinement.
