The Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) has confirmed it will continue to hunt for fugitive Eddy Tansil, the convicted corruptor in the Bank Bapindo embezzlement case who has been on the run for 30 years. In addition to tracking Eddy Tansil’s whereabouts, the AGO is focusing on tracing assets to recover state losses.

“To this day we are still trying, but so far we have not found him,” said AGO Head of Public Information Anang Supriatna to reporters at the AGO Round Building in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (23/6/2026).

Anang stated that even though the perpetrator has not been caught, the confiscation of a number of Eddy Tansil’s assets, including money and land, is ongoing. This is being done to recover state financial losses. “But our main priority, aside from finding the person, is also trying to secure the assets that have been seized,” Anang stressed.

Regarding information on Eddy Tansil’s whereabouts from his family, Anang said the investigative team has not yet received any clear leads. It is known that the family voluntarily handed over some assets some time ago. “We have asked the family, but we haven’t found him yet,” he added.

For context, Eddy Tansil is a convicted corruptor from the New Order era involved in the Bank Bapindo embezzlement case. Eddy was found guilty of embezzling USD 565 million (Rp 10.1 trillion at the current exchange rate) through Bank Bapindo credit. His actions were carried out through the Golden Key Group company. In 1994, the Central Jakarta District Court handed down a guilty verdict against Eddy Tansil, which was upheld up to the cassation level decided in 1995.

Eddy Tansil was sentenced to 20 years in prison and a fine of Rp 30 million. He was also ordered to pay restitution of Rp 500 billion and compensate the state for losses of Rp 1.3 trillion. After being found guilty, he was imprisoned at Cipinang Penitentiary. On 4 May 1996, Eddy Tansil escaped from Cipinang prison and has disappeared ever since. Eddy Tansil is suspected of escaping with the help of a prison guard, and his escape was reportedly premeditated.

In 2013, the AGO stated it had received information that Eddy Tansil was in China, a lead they had obtained since 2011. “Indeed, since 2011 there was information that the person concerned was in China. Therefore, our country, Indonesia, through the central authority, in this case the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, has followed up by requesting his extradition from that country,” said the then Deputy Attorney General, Andhi Nirwanto, on Friday (27/12/2013). Since then, Eddy Tansil’s trail has gone cold, and his whereabouts remain a mystery. Although Eddy Tansil has not been caught, the AGO continues to process a number of his assets in Indonesia. Eddy Tansil’s house and several other assets have been auctioned off since 2021.
