Aging Population and Sandwich Generation: Two Converging Phenomena
Indonesia has officially entered the aging population phase, according to the SUPAS 2025 survey, which shows seniors account for 11.97% of the total population, surpassing the 10% benchmark indicating a nation’s entry into this demographic stage. This marks a significant shift in Indonesia’s demographic structure.
The ‘sandwich generation’—middle-aged individuals caught between caring for aging parents and supporting their own children—faces mounting pressures. Responsibilities extend beyond financial support to managing healthcare needs, accompanying parents through medical treatments, assisting daily activities, and providing housing.
Increased life expectancy and the trend of having children at older ages have intensified this phenomenon. Studies indicate the sandwich generation is no longer an isolated case but a growing demographic as the elderly population expands.
