AGI Explains Why Indonesia’s Gaming Industry Has a Bright Future
Denpasar (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Game Association (AGI) has outlined several reasons why the country’s gaming industry has bright prospects and could become a future leader.
“The industry will certainly continue to grow, because young people now see gaming as a career option, unlike in the past,” AGI Chairman Shafiq Husein said at Bali Tech Week 2026 in Denpasar, Bali, on Wednesday.
Shafiq said the industry’s growth could be seen in the participation of around 240 game developers at the Indonesia Game Developer Exchange (IGDX) 2026, part of Bali Tech Week 2026. The ecosystem is also changing: whereas many games were previously developed for mobile, developers are increasingly turning to premium PC and console games.
Games made by Indonesian developers have been successfully distributed to various countries, with the largest sales markets on average being the United States, Europe, Thailand and Malaysia.
“Developers are now more focused on trading premium games for PC and console platforms. As a result, our exports are larger,” he said.
He said the range and content of Indonesian-made games would continue to expand, as overseas markets tend to be more receptive to new offerings.
He also noted that several Indonesian universities now offer courses in game technology development. Shafiq said the programmes showed that the industry was increasingly being recognised as a promising career for the next generation.
He expressed hope that the government would introduce appropriate regulations to support the growth of the gaming ecosystem amid rapid technological advances.
AGI is currently working with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs to bring in mentors from overseas to improve the industry’s workforce skills.
The gaming industry is also expected to make a positive contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) in the future.
