Agents appointed to market analog mobile telephones

JAKARTA (JP): PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) Saturday
appointed eight companies to market advanced analog mobile
telephones in 18 major cities in the country.

The agreements on the telephone marketing was signed in a
ceremony here by Telkom's president Setyanto P. Santosa and
executives of the eight companies, comprising of PT Aksara Tama,
PT Arya Bima Perkasa, PT Mitra Graha Adimandiri, PT Harakom Datra
Nusa, PT Nasio sdn. Electric Co., PT Daya Prima Bersatu, PT Fena
Lasaro and PT Philips Development Corp..

Setyanto said that the eight companies will be responsible for
the marketing of the software of the analog mobile phone system
and the outstations which have access to the analog telephone
networks run by PT Elektrindo Nusantara and Telkom.

"I also expect that the eight agents will also be responsible
for after-sale services," he told reporters after the ceremony.

He said some of the components of the telephones are still
imported.

The eight agents will sell their telephones with their own
brand names. Japan's Oki brand is held by Aksara Tama, Omni of
Australia by Arya Bima Perkasa, Mitracom of Japan by Mitra Graha
Adimandiri, Nokia of Finland by Harakom Datra Nusa, Voxson of
Australia by Nasio, Worldstar of Japan by Daya Prima Bersatu,
Reach of Japan by Vena Lasaro and Philips by Philips Development.

Simon Rikoemahoe, the marketing manager of Philips
Development, said the prices of advanced analog phones will range
between four million rupiah (US$1,835) and six million rupiah per
unit.

An informed source said the prices are relatively high as
compared to those in Hong Kong and Singapore which are between
$500 and $1,000 per unit.

Plan

According to Setyanto, Telkom, in cooperation with Elektrindo
Nusantara, plans to set up 600,000 analog and cellular mobile
telephone units over the coming five years.

Before the end of the year, Telkom will set up outstations for
some 20,000 new analog mobile telephone connections throughout
the country and some 50,000 units of Global System for Mobile
Communications (GSM) cellular telecommunications in Jakarta and
around Batam island near Singapore before the end of this year,
he said.

Rikoemahoe told The Jakarta Post that Telkom will also set up
2,000 outstations of the analog mobile telephone system this
month.

GSM, the leading digital cellular mobile telephone system in
the world, is designed to have global network access, Setyanto
said.

Three analog modes are now available in the country's market,
including the advanced mobile phone system (AMPS-800), Nordic
mobile telephones (NMT-450) and the Telkom's total access
