Aftershocks continue to hit Sangihe Islands
Aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 3.8 to 4.9 continue to occur in the Tahuna District, Sangihe Islands Regency, North Sulawesi. According to the official X account of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Jakarta, approximately 15 tremors between magnitudes 3.8 and 4.9 have shaken the Tahuna District since 10:00 PM WIB on Tuesday (8/6).
The most recent earthquake measured a magnitude of 4.1, centred at 5.45 North Latitude and 125.40 East Longitude, at a depth of 10 kilometres. The agency stated that these earthquakes do not have the potential to trigger a tsunami. However, BMKG noted that because the data was released prioritising speed, the results are not yet stable and may change as more complete data becomes available.
Previously, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck the Sangihe Islands Regency, North Sulawesi, on Monday at approximately 9:53 PM WIB (10:53 PM WIT), which was also confirmed to have no tsunami potential. BMKG reported that the earthquake affecting the Tahuna District was located at coordinates 5.65 North Latitude and 124.80 East Longitude, approximately 239 kilometres from Tahuna, at a depth of 10 kilometres.
