House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani has conveyed condolences to the victims of the train accident involving a long-distance train and a KRL at Bekasi Timur Station. She also reminded that safety elements on railway lines must be enhanced.

“On behalf of myself and the House of Representatives, I extend deep condolences to the victims of the train accident that occurred last night in the Bekasi area,” said Puan Maharani in a written statement on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.

Puan emphasised the importance of the state improving safety aspects in rail transportation.

“We ask the government, PT KAI, and related stakeholders to prioritise safety issues on railway lines more. The system and security on railway lines must be improved,” said Puan.

“Especially at level crossings, which we still find many along the railway routes. Because their safety is very lacking, train accidents often occur and this must be addressed seriously,” she continued.

Puan views the train accident in the Bekasi Timur Station area as not only bringing grief due to fatalities and injuries, but also repositioning public transportation safety as the primary measure of public trust in daily services used by millions of people.

“In urban mobility systems like Jabodetabek, the KAI Commuter Line or KRL is not just a mass transport mode, but a social infrastructure that supports the rhythm of work, education, and community economic activities every day,” she explained.

“Therefore, every major incident not only impacts direct victims, but also has the potential to affect public perception of the safety of using train transportation,” added Puan.

Furthermore, Puan assesses that the accident between the KRL and Argo Bromo Anggrek reveals that metropolitan dense lines now operate at increasingly high levels of complexity, from increased trip frequency, shared tracks for different service types, and narrowing tolerance for disruptions.

“In such conditions, safety cannot be seen merely as compliance with daily operational procedures, but must be present in the form of security standardisation that assures the public that every potential risk has been anticipated,” she stated.
