After Sowing War, Trump Claims US-Iran Peace Deal Could Be Signed This Week

United States President Donald Trump has said a peace deal with Iran could be signed within the next two to three days. “We are at the final stages of what will be a very, very good deal that will not allow them to have a nuclear weapon in any form. And that strait will be reopened soon. That strait will be reopened as soon as it’s signed. It could be done in two or three days,” Trump told reporters. When asked to clarify his remarks, Trump confirmed he meant “two or three days,” not weeks. “We have a very good chance to get it done. Frankly, we could have had it done within an hour, if we wanted to. I think we are very close to a very good, strong and important deal,” the US president added. On February 28, the US and Israel launched joint strikes on a number of targets inside Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran subsequently retaliated by striking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East. On April 7, Washington and Tehran announced a ceasefire. However, follow-up talks held in Islamabad ended without a breakthrough. The negotiation process between Iran and the US is currently ongoing. The latest efforts are focused on finalising a draft memorandum of understanding as a basic framework for a deal. At the same time, both sides continue to sporadically launch limited attacks separately.
