After Six Days of Operations, Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Reduced to 3.6%
After six days of intensive firefighting operations, the blaze at the Jatiwaringin Final Processing Site (TPA) in Tangerang Regency has been almost completely brought under control. From a critical point where 70% of the area was ablaze, only around 3.6% remains in the process of being extinguished.
Environment Minister Moh Jumhur Hidayat visited the location on Sunday and expressed his appreciation for the relentless cross-sector collaboration over the past week. “Alhamdulillah, this is the sixth day and thanks to the hard work of all parties, from BNPB, the Tangerang Regency Government, the Ministry of Forestry through Manggala Agni, the Health Service, to the support of various other ministries, the fire conditions continue to improve. From around 70% of the area that was initially burning, only about 3.6% remains. Hopefully, by this afternoon or tomorrow, it can be completely extinguished,” Jumhur stated.
The success was achieved through a combination of simultaneous methods, including water bombing, water injection into the lower layers of the waste pile, and continuous ground-based firefighting. Although the main fire is nearly out, Jumhur cautioned that the threat is not entirely over, as the hot weather caused by El Niño could potentially trigger new fires at other landfill sites if not anticipated early.
“I ask all regents and mayors responsible for waste management to ensure preparedness in facing El Niño. Ensure there are no activities that could potentially trigger fires around the TPA, prepare water sources, position firefighting equipment nearby, and carry out early mitigation,” he stressed. The Ministry of Environment has also issued Ministerial Circular Letter Number 11 of 2026 concerning Preparedness and Anticipation of Landfill Fires during Extreme Hot Weather Conditions as a guideline for all regional governments.
Deputy for Emergency Management at BNPB, Budi Irawan, stated that weather modification operations are still awaiting the formation of suitable clouds, based on information from BMKG, which is expected within the next six to seven days. “Water bombing continues, and ground-level firefighting is carried out using the method of injecting water into the waste pile,” Budi said. Tangerang Regent Maesyal Rasyid confirmed that no residents required hospital referral, with health services remaining on standby at evacuation posts since the first day to treat residents suffering from health issues due to the smoke.
