After Numerous Victims Hit by Trains, KAI Urges People Not to Spend Time Near Railway Tracks
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SEMARANG – PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Indonesia Daop 4 Semarang has stated that ten accidents have occurred on railway tracks and level crossings this year, resulting in 16 deaths. In light of these incidents, PT KAI Daop 4 Semarang is urging the public not to spend time near railway tracks, especially during the period leading up to sunset (ngabuburit).
“During the holy month of Ramadan, people are still gathering or playing near railway tracks, both during sahur (pre-dawn meal) and before breaking their fast. KAI strictly prohibits people from being on railway tracks for any activity other than operational purposes related to trains,” said the Public Relations Manager of KAI Daop 4 Semarang, Luqman Arif, on Thursday (26/2/2026).
He stated that the increased frequency of train journeys, especially leading up to the Eid al-Fitr transportation period, requires the public to be more aware of their activities near railway tracks. According to Luqman, when people are engrossed in spending time near railway tracks, they often do not realize that they are in a prohibited area that can endanger their safety.
Luqman stated that KAI continues to strengthen security patrols in railway areas by increasing the number of personnel stationed at vulnerable points. This is to anticipate unwanted incidents.
“KAI is working with local authorities to increase security in areas considered vulnerable to security and public order disturbances. Security personnel are also on standby at various strategic locations, including unguarded level crossings that have high levels of motor vehicle traffic,” said Luqman.
According to Luqman, they are also actively conducting socialization, including visiting schools and various communities. This is to increase public awareness about the dangers of being active near railway tracks.
Luqman stated that they recorded ten accidents on railway tracks and level crossings this year, resulting in 16 fatalities, including one person with serious injuries and one with minor injuries. In 2025, PT KAI Daop 4 Semarang recorded 61 accidents on railway tracks and level crossings, causing 52 deaths.
He explained that the prohibition of activities on railway tracks is stipulated in Article 181 paragraph (1) of Law Number 23 of 2007 concerning Railways. Violations of this regulation can be subject to criminal sanctions in the form of imprisonment for a maximum of three months or a fine of up to IDR 15 million.
