Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has spoken out regarding the wave of layoffs that affected approximately 8,000 employees. The admission was made directly to the tens of thousands of Meta employees remaining amidst the company’s massive restructuring.

In an internal memo sent to around 78,000 employees on Wednesday morning local time, Zuckerberg not only expressed gratitude to the affected workers but also made two significant promises to the remaining staff. First, Meta does not plan to conduct further mass layoffs this year. Second, he admitted that the company failed to maintain a clear process during the restructuring period.

“Meta does not anticipate further mass layoffs this year,” Zuckerberg wrote in the memo, as reported by The Times of India. This statement serves as the first signal of stability for thousands of employees who have lived in uncertainty regarding their job security over recent months.

The layoffs announced by Meta encompass approximately 10% of the company’s total workforce. The notifications were carried out in three waves starting on 20 May, beginning in Asia, followed by Europe, and finally the Americas.

For employees in the United States, Meta is offering severance pay of 16 weeks, plus an additional two weeks for every year of service. They will also receive health coverage through the COBRA programme for 18 months.

In addition to the layoffs, approximately 7,000 employees are being reassigned to new projects focused on artificial intelligence (AI). Meanwhile, around 6,000 previously opened recruitment positions have been cancelled.

In the memo, Zuckerberg also acknowledged that the company was not sufficiently transparent in communicating information to employees. He stated that Meta should have communicated more effectively during the weeks of uncertainty preceding the layoff announcement. For many employees who spent nearly a month without knowing if their positions were secure, this admission is considered significant, even if it arrived late.

Behind these large-scale layoffs, Meta is known to be pouring massive investments into AI development. The company plans to spend between US$124 billion and US$145 billion in capital expenditure throughout this year, nearly double the amount spent in the previous year. These funds are largely allocated to the construction of data centres, the development of specialised AI chips, and the training of AI models operated through Meta Superintelligence Labs.

Concluding his internal memo, Zuckerberg reaffirmed the importance of AI to the company’s future. “Success is not a certainty. AI is the most important technology in our lives,” he wrote. However, for the approximately 70,000 employees remaining at Meta, the biggest question is not the future of AI, but whether the stability promised by Zuckerberg will truly last longer than the uncertainty they have endured over recent months.
