After Examining 31 Witnesses in the Aftermath of the Bekasi Train Accident
The police investigation into the train collision case involving the Argo Bromo Anggrek (KA) and KRL at Bekasi Timur Station continues. The case handling has been elevated to the investigation phase, and 31 witnesses have been examined.
The Argo Bromo Anggrek train previously collided with the KRL at Bekasi Timur Station on Monday night (27/4/2026). The incident resulted in 16 deaths and 90 others injured.
At the time of the accident, a Green SM taxi was temporarily stopped in the middle of the railway tracks not far from Bekasi Timur Station due to an electrical short circuit issue. The taxi was then hit by the KRL travelling from Cikarang towards Jakarta. The KRL involved in the accident with the taxi subsequently stopped in the middle of the tracks.
On the other side, a KRL heading towards Cikarang was stopped at Bekasi Timur Station as a result of the incident between the Jakarta-bound KRL and the Green SM taxi. It was this stationary KRL at Bekasi Timur Station that was subsequently hit by the Argo Bromo Anggrek train travelling from Jakarta.
In response to the accident incident, Polda Metro Jaya deployed a team to conduct an inquiry. After gathering witness statements and evidence, the police elevated the case status to the investigation stage.
“This case has been elevated to the investigation stage. We have conducted scene processing, witness examinations, and evidence collection including CCTV,” said the Head of Public Relations of Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Budi Hermanto, to reporters at Monas, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (30/4/2026).
During the investigation process, the police examined several parties with important roles in train operations, from the train movement control centre staff (Pusdalops), PPKA, signal officers, KRL drivers, Argo Bromo Anggrek train drivers, assistant drivers, to movement controllers.
Furthermore, the police are collaborating with the Forensic Laboratory Centre (Puslabfor) team from Police Headquarters to delve into the cause of the accident. One aspect being investigated is the possibility of technical disruptions, including the influence of the electrical system or signals at the incident location.
Meanwhile, the online taxi driver involved in the incident remains in witness status. Based on examination results, the driver with initials RRP is known to have started working as a driver only since 25 April 2026, or a few days before the incident.
“From the statements of the driver or the online taxi driver who has been questioned, the individual started working since 25 April 2026. So, just a few days before the incident. And underwent one day of training,” said Budi.
The police will also examine the operational system and recruitment standards of the online taxi company. This is to determine if there was any negligence in the recruitment or driver training process.
Regarding the police investigation process, KAI stated its readiness to support the legal proceedings.
“The investigation and all processes must be fully supported for the future safety of rail transport,” said KAI Vice President Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, to reporters on Saturday (2/5).
31 Witnesses Have Been Examined
Currently, the police have examined 31 witnesses related to the train accident incident in Bekasi. The case is being handled by the Subdirectorate Kamneg team of Ditreskrimum Polda Metro Jaya.
“As of now, investigators have taken statements from 31 people,” said the Head of Public Relations of Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Budi Hermanto, to reporters on Sunday (3/5).
He stated that the 31 witnesses consist of the reporter, taxi driver, gatekeeper, witnesses around the location, victims, and PT KAI operational staff.
“Consisting of the reporter, taxi driver, gatekeeper, witnesses around the location, victims, PT KAI operational staff, and other parties who directly know about the incident,” explained Kombes Budi.
The police have also conducted a urine test on the Green SM taxi driver with initials RRP involved in the collision between the Argo Bromo Anggrek KA and KRL at Bekasi Timur Station. The results showed that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
“Yes, that (urine test) has been done, no (under the influence of alcohol),” said Kombes Budi.
Police Summon Green SM Taxi Party
Further examination of statements from several witnesses is still being conducted by Polda Metro. Next, the police will seek statements from the Green SM Taxi party, the Public Works Department, to the Directorate General of Railways.
“Next, on Monday, investigators will also seek statements from the Spatial Planning Department, Public Works Department, Green Taxi party, and the Directorate General of Railways,” said Kombes Budi.
Kombes Budi stated that the statements will be used to complete the series of investigations and to obtain a complete and objective picture of the incident.
