After Earthquake Amid Drought, DMC Dompet Dhuafa Distributes Clean Water to Earthquake Survivors
NAGEKEO – In addition to the earthquake, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) falls into the ‘Extremely Long’ category for consecutive days without rain and is on ‘Awas’ (warning) status for meteorological drought.
According to data from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), 11 regencies are on ‘Waspada’ (alert) status for drought: Ende, Manggarai, West Manggarai, East Manggarai, Rote Ndao, Sabu Raijua, Sikka, West Sumba, Southwest Sumba, Central Sumba, and South Central Timor.
A further 10 cities/regencies are in the drought ‘Awas’ category: Alor, Belu, East Flores, Kupang City, Kupang Regency, Lembata, Nagekeo, Ngada, East Sumba, and North Central Timor.
Moreover, NTT has been affected by a very strong El Niño phenomenon, ozone depletion and the greenhouse effect, all of which add to the reasons the province is prone to drought.
In response to this reality, Dompet Dhuafa distributed clean water to shared storage points for earthquake survivors at four locations in Maropokot Village and Tonggu Rambang Village, Aesesa District, Nagekeo Regency, on Tuesday (8/9/2026).
“We are distributing clean water to earthquake survivors in NTT because access to clean water is their right. Beyond the earthquake threat, the survivors’ areas also face the threat of drought,” said Eka Suwandi, Head of Emergency Response, Recovery and Reconstruction at the Disaster Management Center (DMC) of Dompet Dhuafa, in a written message.
The Dompet Dhuafa NTT team combed the displacement areas one by one, filling water storage points with clean water donated by Dompet Dhuafa’s donors. Some 200 beneficiaries were assisted through this clean water distribution.
“Thank you to the Dompet Dhuafa donors. May you be increasingly blessed, amen,” said one beneficiary.
To this day, the DMC continues to accompany efforts to accelerate the recovery of earthquake survivors in NTT. It is hoped that affected residents and survivors will recover soon and be able to rebuild their futures.
