After Becoming Embarkation Pilot Project, Yogyakarta Deputy Governor Urges Uniform Use of E-Passports for Hajj Pilgrims

The Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) administration has proposed that all Hajj pilgrims from the region use electronic passports (e-passports) for future Hajj pilgrimages. The use of e-passports is considered capable of accelerating the immigration inspection process while enhancing the comfort of pilgrims during their journey. Deputy Governor of DIY, KGPAA Paku Alam X, conveyed this proposal following Yogyakarta’s selection as a pilot project for hotel-based Hajj embarkation this year. He therefore believes it is necessary to continue introducing service innovations, one of which is encouraging the use of e-passports for all Hajj pilgrims from DIY. “I am grateful that DIY has been given the opportunity to become a pilot project for hotel-based embarkation. However, going forward, I hope there will be more innovations in Hajj services in DIY, for instance, if possible, all DIY Hajj pilgrims could uniformly use e-passports,” he said when receiving a delegation from the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah of DIY at Gedhong Pareanom, Kepatihan Complex, Yogyakarta. Paku Alam X explained that e-passports offer several advantages over ordinary passports. One key benefit is the acceleration of immigration inspection processes, both upon departure from Indonesia and upon arrival in Saudi Arabia. With a faster process, queues can be shortened, ensuring that pilgrims, particularly the elderly, do not have to wait too long. He added that the use of e-passports would also facilitate officers in providing services, as travel data is stored electronically and is easier to verify. “Therefore, I request that a methodology be developed aimed at providing ease of implementation. I believe this can be done even without central government instruction. DIY can be a pioneer, for the convenience of officers and the comfort of pilgrims,” he stated.
