The Menteng Tenggulun slum area in Jakarta is undergoing redevelopment through a 75-day renovation programme from 1 April 2026 to 15 June 2026, aimed at creating more decent living environments while boosting community economic productivity.

The redevelopment was marked by a groundbreaking ceremony led by the Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP), Maruarar Sirait, known as Ara, on Wednesday (1 April 2026).

A total of 152 unfit houses will be renovated under this programme. The implementation involves various parties, including Astra, which is contributing to 100 housing units, as well as support from Boy Thohir and Lawrence Barki, each providing 25 units.

Beyond targeting housing improvements, the Menteng Tenggulun area redevelopment also encompasses environmental infrastructure enhancements.

Additionally, a boulevard for the area will be constructed, equipped with green open spaces, communal areas, and playgrounds.

Ara emphasised that addressing slum areas cannot rely solely on physical construction but must be accompanied by strengthening community economies.

“It is pointless to repair houses and roads if we do not improve the economy. I request that Ladies Bankers mentor SMEs so there are success stories that residents can emulate,” she stated.

As part of these efforts, 35 SME actors will receive intensive mentoring from Ladies Bankers from various banks, including Artha Graha, CIMB Niaga, BNI, Hi Bank, Nobu Bank, BTN, BRI, Bank Jago, and BCA.

The Head of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), Muhammad Qodari, praised the programme for touching on multiple aspects simultaneously.

“Programmes as comprehensive as this are rare. I see the residents are very enthusiastic, and this has the potential to bring prosperity,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy (KASAL), Muhammad Ali, stated that the Navy’s involvement is a form of care for the surrounding community.

“This is also part of the President’s directive for the TNI to assist the people. It is hoped that programmes like this can continue,” he said.

Through a collaborative cross-sectoral approach, the government hopes that the Menteng Tenggulun redevelopment can serve as a model for handling urban slum areas.
