After 10 Years, Bekasi City Gateway Begins Demolition
BEKASI, KOMPAS.com – The demolition of the Bekasi City landmark gateway on Jalan HM Joyomartono, East Bekasi, began on Tuesday night (21/4/2026).
Based on Kompas.com’s observations at the site on Wednesday afternoon (22/4/2026), several parts of the gateway’s construction have been removed.
However, the main frame still stands with supports on both sides of the road.
Traffic activity around the location remains busy but smooth.
Motorcycles, private cars, and trucks can be seen passing under the gateway. The gateway was built in 2016 and has now stood for 10 years.
“There are no plans yet for reconstruction. It is being demolished because that position will be crossed by the Becakayu Toll route,” said Ridwan when confirmed by Kompas.com via message on Wednesday.
Ridwan explained that before the demolition, his side had conducted a comprehensive technical study, including traffic arrangements during the process.
“Before the demolition, discussions on the technical work and traffic engineering were held first with the Transportation Agency, Traffic Unit, and regional elements,” he stated.
“From DBMSDA, we only facilitate everything related to the toll road route and its future construction technicalities,” Ridwan added.
For information, the Head of DBMSDA Bekasi City, Idi Sutanto, stated that the gateway’s demolition is not only impacted by the Becakayu Toll project route.
It is also due to its damaged condition that poses a potential hazard.
He mentioned that the demolition process is targeted to be completed in about one week and is carried out at night to minimise traffic disturbances.
“If it goes smoothly, it will be finished in a week. The work starts from 10:00 p.m. WIB until 5:00 a.m. WIB,” said Idi when contacted via message on Friday (17/4/2026).
“Now it’s still in the tender process, possibly starting by the end of this year (construction),” he added.
