Six jailed for people trafficking

VIETNAM: Vietnamese court has sentenced six gang members,
including three women, to between two and 30 years imprisonment
for trafficking 18 women and children to Cambodia, court
officials said on Thursday.

The southern Vinh Long People's Court on Wednesday sentenced
the ringleader Nguyen Thi Ngoc Yen to 30 years in prison while
five other members of the gang received jail terms from two to 20
years, a court clerk said.

The gang, which was broken up in January this year, was
accused of having trafficked 18 Vietnamese females, the youngest
being only 15 years old, to Cambodia since June 2002.

The bust was made after police in Mekong Delta province
received a tip-off from three victims who returned to Vietnam
after escaping from brothels in Cambodia.

The whereabouts of the other 15 remained unknown as some of
them were later sold to Malaysia from Cambodia. -- AFP
