Affordable Gigabit Internet Gains International Recognition

PT Solusi Sinergi Digital Tbk (SURGE) has received international recognition for its high-speed home internet service, winning the WBBA Gigacity Champion Award at the Broadband Development Summit APAC 2026 in Bangkok on 14 July 2026. The award was given for the company’s Starlite SUPER fixed broadband service, which utilises XGS-PON and Wi-Fi 7 technology to deliver speeds of up to 2,000 Mbps at a tariff of Rp250,000 per month. The accolade acknowledges the company’s efforts to foster a Gigacity ecosystem by providing cutting-edge gigabit internet services that remain accessible to the public, marking a new milestone in Indonesia’s fixed broadband development and strengthening the nation’s position in Wi-Fi 7 implementation across the Asia-Pacific region.

‘This award is recognition that innovation is not just about presenting the most advanced technology, but also ensuring that technology can be enjoyed by as many people as possible,’ said Director of PT Solusi Sinergi Digital Tbk, Shannedy Ong, on Thursday (16/7). ‘Through Starlite SUPER, we want to bring a world-class internet experience with speeds of up to 2000 Mbps to Indonesian homes at an affordable price.’ The service is supported by digital infrastructure combining XGS-PON-based Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) with a fibre optic backbone spanning over 8,000 kilometres along the national railway corridor. The network was developed in partnership with NTT East, which holds a 49 percent stake in WEAVE, a SURGE subsidiary responsible for building and operating the Starlite FTTH network. The implementation of XGS-PON and Wi-Fi 7 technology is supported by Huawei as a technology solutions partner.

‘We are not building this alone. NTT East brings world-class expertise in fibre network construction, while our technology partners provide solutions that enable the implementation of Wi-Fi 7 services with speeds of up to 2000 Mbps,’ Ong added. ‘Together, we are building the foundation for the Gigacity era in Indonesia.’ Beyond expanding its fibre network, the company is also developing a 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) home internet service called IRA-Internet Rakyat, offering unlimited access with speeds up to 100 Mbps for Rp100,000 per month. The company noted that this subscription cost is equivalent to approximately 1.4 percent of Indonesia’s monthly Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, well below the 2 percent affordability threshold set by the UN Broadband Commission. In comparison, World Bank data indicates the average cost for entry-level fixed broadband services in Indonesia is around 4.8 percent of monthly GNI per capita.
