Affair Couple Arrested for Abandoning Newborn on Sancaka Train
Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the discovery of a baby in the toilet of the Sancaka 84B train travelling from Yogyakarta to Surabaya. The perpetrators are a couple engaged in an extramarital affair.
The suspects are a 31-year-old man from Semarang residing in Yogyakarta, identified by the initials HDP, and his mistress, a 25-year-old woman from Tegal identified as NIZ. HDP was arrested in Yogyakarta on Wednesday, 8 July, and NIZ was detained in Tegal the following day.
Solo Police Deputy Chief AKBP Sigit stated that the baby boy found on the Sancaka train on Saturday, 4 July, was delivered by NIZ independently. “The two suspects were dating and engaged in sexual relations, resulting in NIZ becoming pregnant. On 1 July 2026, NIZ gave birth to the child at home by herself,” Sigit said during a press conference at the Solo Police headquarters on Friday, 10 July 2026.
The day after giving birth, NIZ travelled to Yogyakarta to meet her boyfriend, who works there. The pair stayed at a hotel and planned the disposal of the baby. Head of the Women and Children Protection Unit at the Solo Police, Commissioner Ratna Karlinasari, said the couple initially planned to leave the baby at an orphanage. “According to the female suspect’s statement, she went to an orphanage, but they only offered a three-month care period. Her plan was to retrieve the baby once she was able and had married the man,” Ratna explained.
The abandonment occurred on Saturday, 4 July, at Klaten Station. The story began when the couple boarded a KRL commuter train from Lempuyangan Station heading towards Solo. Upon reaching Klaten Station, they intended to return to Yogyakarta by KRL. Spotting the Sancaka train stopped at the station, they decided to leave the baby there. “Because they could not arrange the long-term care they wanted, they took the initiative to place the baby on the train or in a public place so it would be quickly found and taken in by someone else,” she clarified. “They were KRL passengers. The Sancaka train happened to be next to the KRL, so that gave them the idea,” she added.
Following a report, police conducted an investigation involving KAI Operational Area 6 Yogyakarta. Officers traced CCTV footage from Lempuyangan Station, Klaten Station, and stations in Solo. Once the suspects’ identities were established, police first arrested HDP on Wednesday, 8 July, in Yogyakarta. NIZ was arrested a day later in Tegal. “The motive was their confusion because they were not married. The man already has a wife and two children. The woman is single,” the officer stated.
Several pieces of evidence were seized in the case, including the suspects’ clothing, a suitcase, and baby supplies. For their actions, both suspects are charged under Article 429 in conjunction with Article 430 and Article 20 of the Criminal Code concerning child neglect, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment.
