AFC chief rules out changing award rule
KUALA LUMPUR: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president
Mohammed bin Hammam refused on Thursday to consider changing
controversial rules that prevented Asia's top stars from being
crowned player of the year.
But the Qatari admitted altering the date of the ceremony to
accommodate European-based players was being considered.
"No matter who they are, their presence on the award night is
essential. If he does not come he won't get it," bin Hammam said
here.
"The night is designed to celebrate Asia's player of the year.
There were more than 400 participants at the ceremony last night.
Imagine that they all come here and the chief guest doesn't turn
up.
"Our reputation is damaged if the player doesn't turn up."
The top honour eventually went to Saudi Arabia defender Hamad
Al Montashari, who agreed to travel to Malaysia's capital. --
