Advertising censorship
From Neraca
The establishment of private television stations in Indonesia caused advertising to boom. Companies greatly benefit from placing advertisements on television. However, many of us are not aware of the negative effect the ads have on viewers.
It should be noted that most advertisements on television are arrogant, unethical and vulgar (not to mention the foreign films which show sadistic scenes).
Whether the negative effect can be overcome or not depends on the attitude of the viewers. But there should at least be a social institution which can be involved in exercising control over what is happening in the society. In this case it should be the Foundation of Institution of Indonesian Consumers.
As an institution responsible for protecting the interest of the consumers, the foundation has the obligation to monitor the development of the advertising business on television, and warn companies found violating ethical codes.
