JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy (KSAL), Admiral TNI Muhammad Ali, has revealed the capabilities of KRI Canopus-936, the latest warship of the Indonesian National Armed Forces Navy. He explained that KRI Canopus-936 is an auxiliary hydrographic oceanographic vessel designed to conduct underwater surveys and mapping. However, the ship is also prepared to support submarine search and rescue operations or as a submarine rescue vessel. “So this will be the first submarine rescue ship we have,” said Ali at the Kolinlamil Pier, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Monday (11/5/2026). This equipment enables the execution of hydrographic, oceanographic, geophysical surveys, and detailed seabed mapping with high accuracy. The ship also has deep-sea and shallow-sea survey capabilities, including surveys in coastal areas using two small boats carried on board. In addition to its scientific functions, the ship has capabilities to support military and maritime security operations, including submarine route mapping, sea mine detection, security patrols, and maritime intelligence support. Regarding the operation of the ship, Ali assured that TNI AL personnel have undergone seven months of training in Germany. Previously, they also received hydrographic education and training in various countries, including Indonesia. “Its crew capacity (can accommodate) 100 people. Maximum 100 people. It can collaborate to carry personnel from other surveys. For example, BRIN might join later. From ministries/institutions related to underwater surveys,” he said. According to Ali, the presence of KRI Canopus-936 will strengthen Indonesia’s underwater surveying capabilities.
