An advanced artificial intelligence (AI) feature for item identification has been introduced in Indonesia. An international express delivery service provider has begun using this sophisticated feature. Senior Technical Advisor of DHL Express Indonesia, Ahmad Mohamad, stated that this is the first time in the global express delivery industry that computer vision technology has been used to analyse photos of goods uploaded by customers and instantly generate accurate item descriptions that comply with customs requirements. He explained that this innovation simplifies one of the most complex stages in international shipping, making it easier and more practical for customers. “As more Indonesian businesses seek growth opportunities in international markets, the ability to provide accurate shipping information from the outset becomes increasingly important,” he said. He explained that the AI system processes the image through a server-based computer vision model to identify the object and produce a structured item description in seconds, adhering to international documentation standards and customs regulations. The generated description is then presented to the customer for review, editing, or adjustment before the shipment is submitted. This implementation marks a significant step in the application of AI in the logistics sector and is the first time computer vision-based item identification technology has been integrated directly into the customer booking flow of an international express service on a large scale. “With just one photo, a customs-compliant item description is immediately available, simplifying the process from the very start of the shipment. It enhances data accuracy, reduces the risk of delays, accelerates customs clearance, and delivers a better customer experience,” he concluded.
