Adus Salam: Spreading Faith Through Halal Slaughterer Profession
“Animal slaughter must not only be halal according to Islamic law, but also performed with ihsan. We must not be harsh, let alone harm the animals. In the concept of ihsan, there is a value of compassion and animal welfare that must be upheld,” said Adus Salam.
Adus Salam is a halal slaughterer from Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta. He currently serves as a consultant for the South Jakarta Regional Leadership Council (DPD) of the Halal Slaughterers (Juleha) organisation, established in 2016. He joined Juleha Indonesia in 2017, though his passion for animal slaughter had grown since childhood. The profession was passed down directly from his parents, who were also animal slaughterers. Since childhood, Adus has been familiar with the slaughter process and often observed his parents’ work.
“From a young age, I witnessed the slaughter process and imitated my parents, though it wasn’t yet directed. It was only when I joined the Juleha Indonesia organisation that it became purposeful,” he said.
Slaughtering in Brunei
Adus’s experience with Juleha took him into the international arena. In 2021, he was selected to fly to Brunei Darussalam after a local expert there required skilled labour for a slaughterhouse. “I was selected from 80 candidates, with four chosen. Alhamdulillah, I made the cut and flew to Brunei. We were specifically employed for Eid al-Adha there. Brunei indeed still lacks skilled personnel in slaughter,” he said.
