Adultery hot stuff in Banyumas
PURWOKERTO, Central Java: In a sign that the debate on the
national education system is heating up, an official in the
Central Java town of Banyumas revealed on Thursday that many
elementary school teachers in the region were engaged in illicit
amorous liaisons.
Secretary of the Banyumas regency administration, Bambang
Priyono, claimed that the violations committed by elementary
school teachers were legion, and included being absent without
leave, embezzlement and adultery.
But number one on the list of illicit activities engaged in by
the teachers was adultery.
"Of about 8,000 elementary school teachers, there are 50 cases
of violations every week. Mostly adultery, embezzlement,
absenteeism and gambling," Bambang said at a ceremony marking the
appointment of 232 school head teachers in Banyumas.
He asked head teachers to monitor the conduct of their
subordinates closely so that their embarrassing activities could
be halted. "Teachers should serve as role models in the
villages," he added.
According to Bambang, the level of adultery among elementary
school teachers reached 0.05 percent. This figure was, however,
higher than the corresponding figure for adultery among high-
school teachers.
He added that the incidence of adultery in rural areas was
higher than in urban area.
Adultery among elementary school teachers has been the subject
of public debate recently in Central Java. Two elementary school
teachers were fired last month after allegedly committing
adultery. --JP
