Ads, films 'degrade women'
JAKARTA: Locally made films and advertisements denigrate
women, according to State Minister of Women's Empowerment Sri
Redjeki Sumaryoto.
Films and advertisements portray women whose lives are
confined to the kitchen, bedroom, laundry and dressing room, she
told a seminar on gender equality in film and advertising on
Wednesday.
"The storylines of films and advertisements are predictable as
far as women are concerned. They don't promote gender equality,"
she said.
She said the lack of gender awareness among media workers had
worsened public perception of women, which hampered women's
empowerment.
Pessimists see the promotion of gender equality as a
propaganda tool of women to beat men rather than part of the
quest to promote democracy, she said. --Antara
