Shantanu Narayen, Chief Executive Officer of digital creative software developer Adobe, has announced his resignation. Adobe made the announcement on Thursday, 12 March 2026, US time.

Narayen’s decision comes amid growing scepticism regarding Adobe’s ability to survive amid the onslaught of artificial intelligence (AI).

Narayen has held the position of CEO for the past 18 years at Adobe and will remain in the role until the company appoints a replacement. Following his resignation, Narayen will also retain his position as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Since Narayen’s tenure as leader, Adobe’s annual revenue has increased nearly sixfold to approximately $24 billion USD (Rp 406 trillion). Employee numbers have also grown from around 7,000 to over 30,000 people.

He is renowned as the architect of one of the most successful software business model transformations: the shift from one-time licence sales to a recurring subscription model for application packages.

Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella has described Narayen’s leadership as a “legendary” journey. Figma CEO Dylan Field characterised him as a wise and determined leader in pursuing Adobe’s vision.

Amid the generative AI trend that enables users to create graphic designs from text or image prompts alone, software design companies such as Adobe face pressure to remain competitive and grow.

Similar companies such as Salesforce and Atlassian are similarly struggling to attract new customers owing to the emergence of new AI companies.

Adobe itself has integrated various AI features into its creative and marketing software. The company has also developed its own AI model designed to generate images without copyright infringement risk.

Consequently, Narayen’s departure, according to analyst Grace Harmon from market research firm eMarketer, raises questions regarding Adobe’s future strategic direction.

“This CEO change adds questions regarding strategy continuity, capital allocation priorities, and pace of innovation,” Harmon stated.

She believes investors will likely monitor whether Adobe’s new chief executive can maintain a balance between disciplined business execution and aggressive investment in AI, particularly as competition in creative and enterprise AI technology intensifies.

Narayen’s departure announcement has impacted Adobe’s share price, which declined. The US company’s shares fell approximately 7 per cent in after-hours trading in New York, following a previous close of $269.78 (approximately Rp 4.5 million) per share.

Throughout 2026, Adobe shares have also fallen approximately 23 per cent and approached their lowest level in the past three years, according to data compiled from Bloomberg.
