Adequate Parking Spaces Identified as Major Challenge in Jakarta
The Jakarta Provincial Government considers the provision of adequate parking spaces for the public to be a current challenge in the effort to tackle illegal parking issues in Jakarta.
“This is also a challenge for us to provide more parking pockets for the community,” said the Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, Budi Awaluddin, in Jakarta on Monday.
On the other hand, he noted that many residents still park their vehicles in unauthorised locations, such as areas marked with ‘no parking’ signs. He also highlighted the prevalence of rogue parking attendants who direct motorists to park in these illegal spots.
Consequently, he added, the Jakarta Provincial Government is conducting joint operations involving the Transportation Agency, the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP), the Social Affairs Agency, the TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces), the National Police, the Population and Civil Registry Office, and the Manpower, Transmigration, and Energy Agency to regularise parking and illegal attendants.
“Hopefully, there will be no more illegal parking or rogue parking attendants. We are conducting ‘valve removal’ operations and towing vehicles that park indiscriminately,” said Budi.
Enforcement efforts are being carried out in South Jakarta, specifically on Jalan Kasablanka, Jalan Rasuna Said, and Jalan Dr. Satrio. In North Jakarta, operations are focused on Kelapa Gading, Pademangan, and Pluit. Meanwhile, in East Jakarta, crackdowns are taking place in Jatinegara Timur, Jatinegara Barat, and the Jatinegara Station area.
According to gathered information, Jakarta possesses thousands of official parking facilities spread across buildings, shopping centres, and public facilities, with a capacity reaching tens of thousands of spaces at transit points, such as the Dukuh Atas area, which holds approximately 30,000 parking units.
