ADEKSI to hold national meeting
AMBON, Maluku: The Association of Regional Legislative
Councils (ADEKSI) is slated to hold a five-day meeting in the
Maluku capital of Ambon to discuss the implementation of Law No.
22/1999 on regional autonomy.
The meeting is set to start on Wednesday, and will be attended
by some 250 councillors from across the country.
Lucky Wattimury, the chairman of ADEKSI, said the meeting was
being held in Maluku to illustrate to the public and to investors
that Maluku had returned to normal and was safe.
Sectarian conflict broke out in Maluku in 1999 and raged for
three years. Thousands of people lost their lives and thousands
of others took refuge in other provinces.
Peace returned to Maluku after warring parties agreed to bury
the hatchet through the Malino Peace Accord, which was signed
last year.
Lucky said that Maluku Governor Albert Karel Rahalalu was set
to kick off the meeting. -- Antara

Regent's daughter prosecuted for drugs
MEDAN, North Sumatra: The prosecutor demanded on Monday that
the Medan District Court sentence Yeni Sri Perangin-Angin, the
daughter of Karo Regent Sinar Perangin-Angin, to six months in
prison for drug possession.
In separate trials on the same day, prosecutor Mardiana
Sianturi also demanded six-month prison sentences for Yeni's
friends M. Lutfi Nasution and Fachrurozi.
The three university students were arrested on June 2, when
they were found inhaling shabu-shabu (crystal methamphetamine) in
a house belonging to Yeni's family in Citra Wisata housing
complex in Medan, said Mardiana.
Besides demanding six-month prison sentences for the three
students, the prosecutor also demanded that they each be ordered
to pay a Rp 1 million fine.
The demand was far below the maximum three-year sentence
stipulated in the 1997 Narcotics Law.
The demand for short sentences sparked allegations that
prosecutor Mardiana had accepted bribes from the parents of the
three students. However, Mardiana denied the allegation, saying
that the three students did not deserved long jail sentences.
"They have never been prosecuted before, and the Bima Hospital
has issued a letter stating that they are addicted to drugs,"

Riau deputy governor's car hit by tree
PEKANBARU, Riau: A tree fell on a car carrying Riau deputy
governor Raja Abdul Aziz on Monday, injuring one passenger and
the driver.
Raja Abdul Aziz escaped injury, while the head of the Riau
Development Planning Board, Zulkifli Saleh, and driver Ujang were
treated at Bumi Waras Hospital for their injuries.
Both were sitting in the front of the car when the tree fell
on it.
Abdul Aziz and Zulkifli Saleh had arrived at Beranti Airport
in Bandarlampung, the capital of Lampung province, and were being
driven to downtown Bandarlampung to attend a sports function.
The tree fell on the car as it passed along Jl. Cut Meutia.
Zulkifli has been released from the hospital, whereas Ujang
requires further medical treatment for a chest injury. -- Antara

Puskud trial to commence next week
PALU, Central Sulawesi: The Palu District Court is scheduled
on Tuesday next week to hear a Rp 10 billion corruption case, the
biggest corruption case here in 20 years.
On trial will be the former head of the Central Sulawesi
subdistrict cooperative units (Puskud), identified only as AD.
Taksin, the head of the Palu District Court, said a panel of
three judges would hear the case.
AD is being prosecuted after the Development Finance
Comptroller (BPKP) audited the books and found that Rp 10.611
billion of the Rp 48 billion belonging to the Central Sulawesi
Puskud was unaccounted for. -- Antara
