Addition of KRL Carriages on Green Line Route Targeted for 2027
PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI) has revealed plans to add carriages to the electric rail train (KRL) sets on the Tanah Abang-Rangkasbitung route, or the Green Line. KAI Commuter’s VP of Corporate Secretary, Karina Amanda, stated that the addition of carriages to the Green Line KRL is being targeted for realisation in 2027. “Currently, the development of the Green Line infrastructure is in the study phase, and it has now entered the final stage,” said Karina when providing information at the Commuter Hall in Juanda, Central Jakarta, on Monday (20/4/2026). For information, the Tanah Abang-Rangkasbitung KRL currently operates with 10-carriage sets. If expanded, there will be 12 carriages per KRL set on the Green Line, similar to the Jakarta Kota-Bogor route. The finalised study means there is already a formulation of which infrastructure programmes will be realised first. For the Jabodetabek region, the Green Line and Jakarta Kota-Bogor routes are currently receiving special attention. When asked which infrastructure development for the Green Line or Jakarta Kota-Bogor route will be prioritised, Karina said it is still being discussed together between the government, PT KAI, and KCI. KCI has provided data on the needs of each route to the government and PT KAI. Trials are being conducted to ensure that supporting infrastructure can accommodate the operation of KRL with 12-carriage formations on the Green Line. When asked when the 12-carriage KRL for the Tanah Abang-Rangkasbitung route will operate for passengers, Karina could not yet confirm. Because after the trials, according to her, there will still be gradual evaluations to be carried out. “If based on the evaluation it is still not feasible, then of course KAI together with the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation will continue to strengthen the infrastructure,” explained Karina. “Including the development of electrification on the line to strengthen capacity and service reliability,” she added. KRL with 12 carriages is projected to carry 20 percent more passengers compared to 10-carriage sets. “For comparison, the 12-carriage Commuterline formation has a transport capacity 20 percent above the 10-carriage Commuterline formation,” said Karina.
