Activists celebrate Earth Day

JAKARTA: Dozens of members of the Indonesian Environment
Lovers Coalition staged a peaceful gathering called the Green
Consumers Movement at the National Monument square on Sunday.

The gathering, which was also held to commemorate world Earth
Day on Monday, was marked with activists carrying a miniature
globe and a banner reading Save the Earth.

One of the activists, Chandra Surya, said environmental
conditions on earth had deteriorated due to human activities.

"The main reason for damage to the environment is man-made
pollution from their failure to properly manage waste disposal,"
he said.

During the campaign, the activists also staged street theater
with the theme of Buah Simalakama where all the participants
formed a circle and stayed in silence for a moment. -- Antara
