Activist Group Urges 17 August Not Be Turned into Political Stage

Ahead of the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s Independence Day on 17 August 2026, various parties are being urged to maintain peace and national unity. This call comes amid circulating information regarding the one-year anniversary of the death of Affan Kurniawan, which falls on 28 August.

Wahab Talaohu of the 98 Resolution Network reminded the public that the tragedy which claimed Affan Kurniawan’s life on 28 August 2025 should not be exploited for short-term political gain or infiltrated by parties seeking to trigger chaos.

“Do not let any party exploit Affan’s death as a political tool. Therefore, the momentum of 17 August 2026 must not be turned into a stage for transient political interests, provocation, or the agendas of those who wish to see Indonesia in turmoil,” Wahab told reporters on Friday, 14 August 2026.

The deceased’s family, through a statement by his biological father Zulkifli, has expressed objection to the death being politicised by provocateurs. The family stressed that what the deceased needs most now is peace and prayers from the public, rather than public ceremonial activities that risk being hijacked by provocative content and hateful incitement.

Wahab also emphasised that national symbols such as the Red and White flag, the national anthem, and independence celebrations should be interpreted as a momentum to strengthen national unity, not tarnished by narratives depicting Indonesia as being in an uncontrollable situation.

“Indonesia still has a lot of homework, but it must be fought for with data, arguments, and democratic mechanisms, not by creating chaos,” he continued.

Regarding the incident that befell the deceased, Wahab noted that the government has shown empathy and genuine commitment from the outset. Wahab called on all elements of society to remain vigilant, not to be easily provoked by video clips, unsourced information, or provocative narratives deliberately played to stir public emotion.

“To anyone wishing to voice their aspirations, do so in an orderly and responsible manner. To the government, continue to open spaces for dialogue and listen to public criticism,” he said.
