Active grenade found in Medan

MEDAN, North Sumatra: An active grenade was found on Wednesday morning in a ditch inside the compound of Kurnia Bus office on Jl. Gadjah Mada here. The finding sparked panic among bus passengers set to leave for Banda Aceh. The passengers ran for safety after a scavenger informed them that he found the grenade. But, the situation quickly calmed, after police officers arrived at the scene and removed the grenade.

A preliminary investigation found that the grenade was apparently only just dropped into the ditch, said chief of Medan Baru police Adj. Comr. Yukni Nasution. "From the appearance of the grenade, it seems that the grenade was just put into the ditch. The police are investigating the case," said Yukni. -- JP
