Active Grenade Found by Scavenger in Bekasi, Suspected British-Made

Police are investigating a grenade found by a scavenger in Tambun Selatan, Bekasi Regency, West Java. Police said the grenade was still active and suspected to be British-made.

“Based on the handling results of the Bomb Disposal Team, the object is a military bomb in the form of a hand grenade with a diameter of approximately 60 mm, length of 100 mm, weight of 410 grams, in an active corroded condition, equipped with a safety pin and safety lever, and suspected to be British-made,” said Tambun Selatan Police Chief Commissioner Wuryanti on Tuesday (18/8/2026).

The grenade has been taken to the Gegana Headquarters of the Metro Jaya Regional Police. It will subsequently be disposed of or destroyed.

“The Metro Jaya Regional Police Bomb Disposal Team evacuated the object to be taken to the Gegana Headquarters for disposal in accordance with procedure,” she said.

The grenade was found on Monday (17/8) evening. Upon receiving the report, officers immediately put up police tape and urged residents to stay away from the discovery site, approximately 50 metres from the crime scene.

“Initial information was received after a scavenger saw a suspicious object, which was then reported by residents to the Tambun Selatan Police,” she said.

Wuryanti urged the public to immediately contact the 110 call centre if they find similar suspicious objects.
