Active British-Made Grenade Found by Scavenger in Bekasi

The discovery of an active grenade caused alarm among residents in Tambun Selatan, Bekasi Regency. The object was first found by a scavenger.

According to detikcom on Wednesday (19/8/2026), the grenade was discovered on Monday (17/8) evening. Residents promptly reported the find to the police.

“Initial information was received after a scavenger spotted a suspicious object, which was then reported by residents to the Tambun Selatan Police,” said Tambun Selatan Police Chief Commissioner Wuryanti to detikcom on Tuesday (18/8).

The bomb squad from Polda Metro Jaya was deployed to the location to carry out the evacuation. The active grenade was then taken to headquarters for disposal.

“The Polda Metro Jaya bomb squad evacuated the object to be taken to the Gegana headquarters for disposal in accordance with procedure,” said Wuryanti.

“The grenade is estimated to be an old item, already heavily corroded. Its origin is not yet known,” Wuryanti added.

Police are investigating the grenade found by the scavenger in Tambun Selatan, Bekasi Regency, West Java. Police stated that the grenade is still active and is suspected to be of British manufacture.

“Based on the bomb squad’s handling, the object is a military hand grenade with a diameter of approximately 60 mm, a length of 100 mm, a weight of 410 grams, in an active and corroded condition, equipped with a safety pin and safety lever, and is suspected to be British-made,” said Wuryanti.

The grenade has been taken to the Gegana headquarters of Polda Metro Jaya. It will subsequently be disposed of or destroyed.

The grenade was found on Monday (17/8) evening. Upon receiving the report, officers immediately put up police tape and urged residents to stay away from the discovery site, approximately 50 metres from the crime scene.
