Acid Attack on Kontras Activist Condemned as Threat to Democracy by PDIP
Jakarta — Vice-Coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (Kontras) Andrie Yunus was reported to have been attacked with acid on Jalan Salemba I, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (12 March 2026). The identity and motives of the perpetrator remain unknown at present.
National Police Commission (Kompolnas) Commissioner Mohammad Choirul Anam viewed the violence against human rights activists as a threat to democratic life. According to him, such an act constitutes more than ordinary violence.
“This is not merely ordinary violence, but violence that sends a message about the condition of our democracy,” he told Republika on Friday (13 March 2026).
He stated that the victim has long been known as an active human rights activist. The state should provide protection for such activists, since their work is regulated and protected by the constitution.
He therefore urged police to thoroughly investigate the case that threatens democratic life. Police must also act with transparency and accountability.
“We urge the police to do their utmost to uncover this incident. The violence suffered by them is a threat to our democratic condition and reflects the state of human rights,” said Cak Anam, as Mohammad Choirul Anam is known.
