Acid Attack Injuries on KontraS Activist: Burns to Face, Chest and Hands

Jakarta – Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), remains under intensive care following an acid attack by unknown perpetrators in the Salemba area of Central Jakarta.

The victim is receiving treatment at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM). Medical examination results have identified burn injuries sustained in the attack. Based on the medical and forensic examination (visum et repertum) findings, Andrie has suffered burns to several parts of his body.

“Burns were identified on the right side of his face extending to his chest, as well as burns on his right hand and left hand,” said Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief Senior Commissioner Reynold Hutagalung, speaking on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

Investigators are continuing their investigation to identify the perpetrators of the acid attack. Police suspect the attack was carried out by four individuals operating two motorcycles.

The Director of General Criminal Investigation at the Metro Jaya Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Iman Imanuddin, stated that the suspects had been tracking the victim’s movements prior to the attack.

“The suspected perpetrators had been monitoring the victim’s movements since before the incident. They moved from South Jakarta towards an initial gathering point on Jalan Merdeka Timur or in front of Gambir Station,” said Iman.

According to him, based on CCTV footage collected by investigators, the perpetrators moved through several roads in central Jakarta.

They were seen passing through Jalan Ir H Djuanda, Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat and the Tugu Tani area before heading towards the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI).

From that location, the perpetrators are believed to have begun following the victim after Andrie Yunus completed his activities at the YLBHI office.

“From YLBHI, the perpetrators followed the victim when he finished his activity. The victim did not go directly to the crime scene but refuelled at Cikini Raya, which was also monitored by the perpetrators,” said Iman.

Around 11:32 PM, the perpetrators were also observed in the Cikini Raya petrol station area. They then waited in the surrounding area before carrying out the attack.
