Achieving Emission Targets, Pertamina Invites the Public to Use Energy Wisely
Pertamina continues to strengthen its commitment to maintaining national energy security while promoting the transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy. At the same time, Pertamina is implementing carbon emission reductions across all business lines to support the government’s Net Zero Emission (NZE) targets and energy efficiency initiatives.
By February 2026, Pertamina recorded a realisation of emission reductions amounting to 354,609 tons of CO2 equivalent, or 112 percent of the current period’s target, as part of the company’s decarbonisation efforts. Pertamina’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, Muhammad Baron, stated that this success is inseparable from Pertamina’s consistency in implementing various energy efficiency programmes across all business lines, from upstream to downstream.
The realisation of decarbonisation that exceeds the target is proof that Pertamina continues to move towards cleaner energy. However, energy sustainability also requires active public participation through thrifty and wise energy use behaviours, Baron said.
He emphasised that efforts to maintain national energy security are not only carried out through operational optimisation and technological innovation but also through education and calls to the public to use energy efficiently and appropriately. According to Baron, wise energy use behaviour has a significant impact on maintaining energy supply stability, especially amid global dynamics affecting the energy sector.
“Wise energy use, such as using fuel according to needs and utilising energy efficiently, is a real contribution from the public in maintaining national energy security while supporting the 2060 Net Zero Emission target,” he added.
In terms of performance, Pertamina’s decarbonisation achievements are driven by contributions from all subholdings. The Upstream subholding recorded the highest performance, exceeding targets, followed by the Downstream and Gas subholdings, which also showed positive performance through various operational efficiency programmes and energy optimisation.
Meanwhile, other subholdings such as Pertamina New & Renewable Energy, as well as Integrated Marine Logistics, continue to strengthen the implementation of decarbonisation programmes through energy efficiency, operational electrification, and the development of new renewable energy.
In addition to running various emission reduction programmes, Pertamina is also continuously refining its NZE targets, including strengthening internal policies such as the implementation of internal carbon pricing, developing low-carbon projects, and integrating sustainability aspects into the company’s business strategy.
With positive achievements at the beginning of 2026, Pertamina is optimistic about achieving its annual decarbonisation targets while strengthening its role as a national energy company that is not only reliable and affordable but also increasingly environmentally friendly.
Pertamina targets emission reductions for 2026 at 1,962,156 tons of CO2 equivalent. Various strategic programmes for emission reductions and energy efficiency continue to be implemented across all Subholdings. In Upstream, Pertamina is implementing fuel gas efficiency through the Optimisation of Gas Turbine Operations with an efficiency of 12 MMSCFD.
Meanwhile, in the Downstream subholding, Pertamina is carrying out upgrades to the APC Boiler-RU VI, optimisation of Gas Engines, implementation of Biofuel, and optimisation of solar power plant (PLTS) use in operations and offices.
Pertamina is also continuing to develop clean energy programmes involving the community, such as the Independent Energy Village, by optimising abundant clean energy sources in rural areas. This step is Pertamina’s commitment to building village-based energy self-sufficiency while boosting the community’s economy.
With various breakthroughs undertaken, Pertamina is currently able to maintain an ESG Risk Rating at medium risk based on analysis by the ESG rating agency Sustainalytics, placing Pertamina at rank 1 out of 54 companies worldwide in the integrated oil and gas sub-industry.
Pertamina invites all Indonesian people to jointly adopt a thrifty and wise energy lifestyle as a simple yet impactful step in maintaining energy sustainability and the earth for future generations.
