The Indonesian Carbon Emissions Experts Association (ACEXI) has launched the COPPER-ACE Initiative to strengthen cross-sector collaboration in reducing carbon emissions and developing governance of Indonesia’s Carbon Economic Value (NEK) framework. The initiative brings together government, businesses, academics, professional associations and industry players to accelerate progress towards national climate targets.

ACEXI launched the initiative at the seminar room of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) building in Jakarta on Friday (9 October 2026), as part of events marking the organisation’s third anniversary.

ACEXI Chairman Lastyo Kuntoaji Lukito said reducing carbon emissions required cooperation among many parties. Through COPPER-ACE, the association aims to build an ecosystem that supports emissions reduction, develops human-resource capacity and strengthens institutions in the carbon sector.

“Approaching its third anniversary, ACEXI sees a great need for collaboration among various parties. The COPPER-ACE Initiative is our concrete response to creating an effective ecosystem for emissions reduction. We want to ensure that Indonesia’s climate solutions are sustainable and equitable by strengthening the capacity of domestic carbon experts,” Lastyo said.

Haryo Pambudi, Director of Governance for the Implementation of Carbon Economic Value, said the government needed to strengthen sectoral and project readiness, investment and carbon-trading mechanisms to develop NEK governance.

Investment, he said, not only served to meet the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target but also created opportunities to achieve more ambitious goals. He also stressed the importance of collaboration in drawing up the 2027 Annual Work Plan, particularly on NEK governance.

Edo Mahendra, Senior Adviser to the Minister of Forestry, said COPPER-ACE could bring stakeholders together to strengthen coordination in developing carbon economic value in Indonesia.

He also highlighted the initiative’s potential application in social forestry. ACEXI, Edo said, could support communities through capacity-building, knowledge-sharing, and the development of standards and best practices, enabling them to participate directly in carbon projects.

This approach is important for strengthening community involvement in protecting forests while creating economic opportunities through carbon management.

IDX Director of Development Iding Pardi said carbon-market development required trading infrastructure as well as a stronger ecosystem connecting different market participants.

Since launching IDXCarbon on 26 September 2023, the IDX has worked to develop the market and its ecosystem in order to broaden participation in carbon trading. However, market participants still face difficulties finding partners, understanding one another’s needs and building collaborations.

Iding hoped COPPER-ACE would connect experts with industry needs, project developers with prospective partners, and carbon-credit suppliers with buyers. This would enable Indonesia to optimise the economic potential of carbon and deliver greater benefits to the domestic economy.

PT Energy Management Indonesia (Persero) President Director Henri Firdaus said the transition to a low-carbon economy required synergy among government, businesses, academics, professional associations and the public.

Cross-sector collaboration, he said, could bridge policy, technical expertise, industrial needs and the implementation of emissions-reduction programmes. PT Energy Management Indonesia (PLN EMI) also said it was ready to explore cooperation in areas aligned with its expertise, particularly energy management, emissions reduction and strengthening a sustainable ecosystem.

At the launch, several companies and associations signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and letters of intent (LoIs) with ACEXI.

Twelve institutions were named as initial partners in the COPPER-ACE Initiative: PT Energy Management Indonesia (Persero), PT Bursa Efek Indonesia, PT Agrotek Lestari Internasional, PT Haskoning Indonesia, RGV Business Solutions, Ikatan Alumni Universitas Indonesia, UMBRA Strategic Legal Solutions, PT BATS International Group, PT Mitra Finanz Wicaksana, PT Biru Karbon Nusantara, PT Recoolit Bumi Lestari and PT Sentra Solusi Automa.

As a next step, ACEXI will map the partners’ areas of focus to identify opportunities for cooperation. The move is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s climate-change mitigation ecosystem and NEK governance.
