Aceh Timur Develops Pulau Idaman as a Premier Tourist Destination

The East Aceh Regency government is developing Pulau Idaman, located on the coast of Gampong Kuala Simpang Ulim, Simpang Ulim District, into a premier tourist destination in the regency. Syahril, Head of the East Aceh Tourism, Youth, and Sports Office, stated on Friday that the island possesses natural beauty with significant potential for development. “Pulau Idaman has great tourism potential. Its natural beauty is still pristine, the environment is well-maintained, and it holds conservation value that must be preserved. This potential needs to be managed properly to benefit the community without damaging its natural sustainability,” he said. According to him, the island has a unique appeal not found in many other tourist areas. Besides offering a lush natural panorama, the 18-hectare island also has conservation value as it serves as a habitat for sea turtles that come ashore to lay eggs during certain seasons. He added that the island, situated not far from the coast of Kuala Simpang Ulim, offers stretches of sand, shady trees, a tranquil atmosphere, and fresh sea air. “These conditions make it a suitable location for family tourism, recreation, and even environmental education or conservation activities,” Syahril said. Beyond nature tourism, Pulau Idaman is also known as a favourite spot for anglers. This activity has provided additional income for the local community through boat rentals, sea transportation services, and the provision of tourist necessities. Syahril noted that the area’s development had previously faced obstacles after some facilities were damaged by coastal flooding. However, the community’s spirit to revitalise tourism on Pulau Idaman has never waned. Syahril believes a community-based tourism concept is the right model for Pulau Idaman, ensuring residents are not just spectators but key players in managing and developing the destination. “Our hope is that the community becomes a major part of tourism management. When tourism grows, the community also gains economic benefits through transportation, culinary services, homestays, and other micro-enterprises,” he said. Syahril is optimistic that Pulau Idaman has a great opportunity to become an icon of coastal tourism in East Aceh if all parties can work together, from the government and village officials to the Panglima Laot and the community. With relatively easy access, a well-preserved natural panorama, and the community’s commitment to environmental protection, Pulau Idaman deserves to become a mainstay tourist destination for East Aceh in the future. “Pulau Idaman’s potential is quite significant. It is just a matter of managing it together while maintaining environmental sustainability. We hope this area will become a safe and comfortable tourist destination and improve the welfare of the coastal community,” Syahril said.
