Aceh Timur Develops Pulau Idaman as a Premier Tourist Destination
Banda Aceh (ANTARA) - The East Aceh Regency Government is developing Idaman Island, located off the coast of Gampong Kuala Simpang Ulim in Simpang Ulim District, into a flagship tourist destination for the regency.
Syahril, Head of the East Aceh Tourism, Youth and Sports Office, said in East Aceh on Friday that Idaman Island possesses natural beauty that represents enormous potential to be developed into a leading tourist destination.
“Idaman Island has great tourism potential. Its natural beauty remains pristine, its environment is still well preserved, and it holds conservation value that must be maintained. Potential like this needs to be managed properly so that it benefits the community without damaging the sustainability of its natural environment,” he said.
According to him, Idaman Island has attractions that many other tourist areas do not possess. Beyond its scenic natural panorama, the island, which spans roughly 18 hectares, also holds conservation value as it serves as a habitat for sea turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs in certain seasons.
He added that the island, situated not far from the Kuala Simpang Ulim coast, offers stretches of sand, shady trees, a tranquil atmosphere and fresh sea air.
“These conditions make it a suitable location for family holidays, recreation, and environmental education or nature conservation activities,” said Syahril.
In addition to nature tourism, Idaman Island is also known as a favourite spot for anglers. This activity has long provided additional income for the surrounding community through boat rentals, sea transport services and the provision of supplies for visitors.
He said the development of the tourist area had faced setbacks after a number of facilities were damaged by flooding that struck the coastal area. Nevertheless, the community’s determination to revitalise tourism on Idaman Island has never wavered.
Syahril believes that community-based tourism is the most appropriate model to apply on Idaman Island. In this way, local residents are not merely spectators but become the primary actors in managing and developing the tourist destination.
“Our hope is that the community becomes a central part of tourism management. As tourism grows, the community will also gain economic benefits through the provision of transport, culinary offerings, homestays and other micro-enterprises,” he said.
Syahril is optimistic that Idaman Island has a strong chance of becoming a coastal tourism icon for East Aceh if all parties can work in synergy, from the government and gampong officials to the Panglima Laot and the local community.
With relatively easy access to the site, a well-preserved natural panorama and the community’s commitment to protecting the environment, Idaman Island is well placed to become a leading tourist destination for East Aceh Regency in the future.
“Idaman Island’s potential is considerable. It is simply a matter of managing it collectively while preserving its natural environment. We hope this area will become a safe and comfortable tourist destination capable of improving the welfare of coastal communities,” said Syahril.
