Aceh mangroves die as seedlings
BANDA ACEH: Hundreds of young mangrove seedlings planted by
several non-governmental organizations and government offices in
tsunami-hit areas in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar regencies have
died.
Some residents said efforts to regreen the areas lacked the
necessary planning and the seedlings died just four to five
months after being planted.
"The seedlings were planted without much care," said Muhammad,
a resident of Lambada area. "Most of the mangrove seedlings in
our area died because the land is not suited to the cultivation
of mangroves." -- Antara
