Aceh High Prosecutor's Office Resolves 57 Cases via Restorative Justice

The Aceh High Prosecutor’s Office (Kejati) and its regional branches across the westernmost province of Indonesia have resolved 57 cases using restorative justice principles throughout 2026.

“A total of 57 cases in Aceh have been terminated based on restorative justice since January until August 2026,” stated the Head of the Aceh High Prosecutor’s Office, Teuku Rahmatsyah, in Banda Aceh on Wednesday.

The former Assistant for Special Crimes at the Aceh High Prosecutor’s Office noted that the dozens of cases terminated via restorative justice included assault, fraud, theft, narcotics, and other offences.

He emphasised that punishing perpetrators is a last resort. Therefore, when legal issues arise, efforts are made to resolve them through restorative justice to avoid the necessity of court proceedings.

The requirements for resolving cases through restorative justice include reaching a peace agreement between all parties, involving both the victims and the perpetrators. Furthermore, the perpetrator must promise not to repeat the offence, and the victim must agree to drop all legal claims.

To support the implementation of restorative justice programmes, the Aceh High Prosecutor’s Office and its regional branches have established ‘Restorative Justice Houses’ (RJ Houses) across 23 regencies and cities in Aceh Province.

“In addition to being located within every district prosecutor’s office, RJ Houses have also been established in villages. These houses serve as educational hubs to raise legal awareness and improve the community’s understanding of the law,” added Teuku Rahmatsyah.
