Aceh discovers additional gas potential from two well workovers

The Aceh Oil and Gas Management Agency (BPMA), in collaboration with Cooperation Contract Contractor (KKKS) Medco E&P Malaka, has discovered additional gas potential from the optimisation of two wells in the WK A block. The workover operations on the JR-74 and JR-38A wells, located in East Aceh Regency, are estimated to add approximately seven million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) to production.

Ibnu Hafizh, Head of the Production Operations Division at BPMA, stated that the success at the JR-74 well was achieved through a series of technical stages, including cement remediation, squeeze cementing, perforation, installation of a single selective completion, and a swab well kick on the Upper Keutapang (UK-4) and Upper Keutapang (UK-5) formations. “Based on technical evaluation, this work has successfully restored gas production potential from the UK-4 and UK-5 formations, with an estimated additional production of around five MMSCFD,” he said in Banda Aceh on Tuesday. A well test will be conducted shortly to confirm the production rate of each zone before the well is prepared for the production phase.

Meanwhile, work on the JR-38A well, carried out from 18 to 31 July 2026, has also shown encouraging progress, with the well successfully flowing gas to the surface and an estimated production potential of approximately two MMSCFD. Ibnu Hafiz added that the success of the workover on the JR-74 well and the progress on the JR-38A well reflect the strong synergy between BPMA and Medco E&P Malaka in optimising existing wells in the WK A block. This achievement is a strategic step to maximise production potential from existing wells to support the national gas production increase, while simultaneously strengthening Indonesia’s energy security.
